Dietary Guidelines

Blood Pressure Problem
Q: I am a 30-year-old, mother of two and a practicing lawyer. My height is 5 feet with weight 59kg. I have been dieting since last six months and have lost 6kg so far. My problem is that my weight has been stuck on 53kg and I can’t lose more. I also have low blood pressure due to which I sometimes feel myself weaker. Amber
A: It is really good that you already have started working on the right track and have shed some kilos too. I can understand your problem, after losing 6kg now your body has reached a level where it gets used to the calories you are taking. Now it has started playing games with you. To deal with it you have to be a little smart. Stop taking the low calorie diet for few days and return to your normal routine. Give some rest to your body, atleast for a week. After the rest follow this very simple diet plan. It will also solve your low blood pressure problem. Take a bowl of cereal for breakfast, fruits and green tea during the mid morning. For lunch you can have a brown bread sandwich with a serving of salad. In evening enjoy a cup of tea with two wheat biscuits. For dinner simply have a bowl of soup with yogurt or boiled rice with dal.

Weight Gain
Q: I am a 23-year-old boy, with height 6 feet and weight 55kg. I’m trying to gain some weight but haven’t been successful yet. Can you help me and suggest a diet plan for me? Kumar Motiani
A: Among so many obese people finally here’s one who wants to gain weight. As you are currently underweight the best way for you to gain weight is to have three large meals and three small meals in a day. Never try to gain weight by developing bad habits like eating junk food. Remember your diet should be balanced one with an equal proportion of fruits, vegetables and meat. Give an energetic kickstart to your day with a healthy banana or potato shake. Your life style should not be sedentary. You can have wonderful weight gain results with weight lifting. Always remember just like weight reduction weight lifting also takes time.

Please Help!
Q: I am a 24-year-old girl, with height 5 feet 6 inches and weight 65kg. I want to shed fat from my lower body. I am a vegetarian and on low calorie diet these days. At present I walk 5 times a week for about 30 minutes. Please guide me how I can lose 10kg by January as my wedding has been planned. Shireen
A: It is a simple fact that everyone wants to look beautiful for the big day of their life but to lose 10kg in just one month is not a healthy option. It is my belief that once a person has decided to lose weight half of his/her journey has already been accomplished. So it means that with the decision to lose weight you have achieved half your task, now you have to work on the remaining half. I have a few suggestions for you; if you follow them properly I am sure you will reach your goal very soon. First make a beautiful food diary for yourself. Write down every food you consume in it, as it will help you in keeping a record of everything you eat. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day. Avoid having junk food, sweets, bakery items and cold drinks. Walk for fifteen minutes after every two hours. Eat an apple or guava if you feel hungry in between your main meals. Make salad an important part of your meal. Have a glass of skimmed milk before going to bed. Also it will be better for you to take a vitamin C 500mg tablet daily. It will make your skin glow.

Late Night Bingeing
Q: I have the bad habit of bingeing at night. I sleep late and wake up two or three times to eat biscuits, bakery items or other snacks. How can I change this habit? Anonymous
A: Eating late at night is not good for you and by waking up again and again to eat something will also have a bad impact on your health. In your question you have not mentioned your weight, age and height which is very important for me to know before giving you any suggestion. If you are overweight then this habit will lead you towards further weight gain. If you are of appropriate weight then occasional munching is not that bad for you. Ideally for a healthy lifestyle one has to be very particular about eating habits. He/she should have breakfast, fruit or fresh vegetable in mid morning, evening snacks should not be more than a cup of milk or tea with wheat biscuits or corn on the cob. Dinner should be very light as compared to other meals of the day. In your case the best solution is to divert your attention towards late night bingeing. Always have a glass of warm milk before going to bed. It will make you feel full. Keep wheat biscuits or some fruit at your bedside so in case you feel hungry you have healthier eating. Hunger pangs are natural for some people so don’t torture yourself.

Diet Plan Needed
Q: I am a 24-year-old girl, with weight 78kg and height 5 feet 5 inches. Kindly suggest a diet plan for me. Anonymous
A: According to your age, height and weight your ideal weight should be 56kg. To lose weight is neither an easy job and nor is it impossible. What you have to do is to closely observe your diet and note down what you are eating. I have given you your target and now it’s your hard work that will help you in achieving it. The common mistake which people usually make is that they lose a little weight (around 4 to 5kg) then they get bored and stop dieting. It has been my practice to change the diet every week or after two weeks so my patients don’t get bore with it. I would suggest you do the same. Try to reduce 100 calories per day and don’t take a diet less than 1200 calories. I never suggest crash dieting as it has a lot of side effects and is not long lasting. Try to increase your physical activity and walk for at least 30 minutes, 5 days a week. The walk should be brisk enough to burn calories. Gradually increase the duration of your walk. Drink lots and lots of water and whenever you feel hungry take an apple, guava or green salads.

Dry Weather
Q: Is there any way to treat dry skin in winters through diet? Sundus Sharif
A: Winters are here and we all are worried about our skin. It’s good to take special care of skin during winter otherwise the skin gets very dry and rough. Moisturise dry skin properly and a good moisturising lotion. Consult a dermatologist for a very rough skin. After cleaning your face leave little water on your skin, apply moisturiser while your skin is damp. Don’t smoke and avoid polluted environment for a glowing skin. Try to take short shower baths and make them warm, not hot. Longer baths remove moisture from your skin. Diet does play a very important role in making our skin smooth and shiny. Use of cabbage, dates, peas, almonds, beans, hazelnuts and apples is very good for skin. Avoid use of red meat, processed foods and cola drinks. Increase intake of vitamin C in your diet for glowing skin. It is found in guavas, lemons, oranges, lime juice and pineapple.
