Watching your child cough furiously is distressing, even though you know it’s nothing serious. Instead of worrying, just step into your kitchen and mix the right natural ingredients together to ease the symptoms. However, these home remedies are not meant to replace your doctor’s advice or medication. It’s just to make you aware of the powerful potential of curative herbs, fruits, vegetables and nuts. So whip up these natural infusions that can help kick-start the body’s own mechanism to fight off common illnesses.

Cough
Symptoms: Throat irritation, chest congestion
Safe remedies
· Boil a cup of water. As it boils, add freshly chopped ginger and a few tulsi leaves. Add freshly crushed pepper and a teaspoon of honey. This drink will ease the coughing and give immediate relief.
· Get your child to drink lots of warm water, to help flush out all the bacteria.
· Another effective remedy is salt water gargling. Get your child to gargle with warm salt water at least thrice a day.
Caution
· Avoid oily foods and cold drink entirely.
· Avoid eating citrus fruits and cucumbers, which can aggravate throat irritation.

Cold
Symptoms: Nose blocks, leaky nose, sore throat
Safe remedies
· Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a bowl of hot water. Position your child’s face over the bowl with a towel draped over the head. Ask her to slowly inhale the vapours through her nose. Repeat at least twice a day. This will clear the nose block.
· Get your child to drink an infusion of ginger, tulsi, pepper and honey to soothe a sore throat.
· Put your child on a liquid diet of hot vegetable or chicken soup. The more liquids she has, the better.
Caution
· Avoid cold drinks, fried foods and taking cold water baths.
Stomach Ache
Symptoms: Discomfort, loss of appetite
Safe home remedies
· Mix mint juice, lemon juice and ginger juice with pepper and give it to your child to drink. Ginger aids digestion and helps release the colicky pain in the abdomen.
· For stomach pain due to indigestion, mix one teaspoon ginger juice, one teaspoon lemon juice and a little salt with two ounces of water. This will make your child feel better.
· Applying ginger juice on your child’s belly or a pinch of castor oil and the navel to ease the pain.
· Let your child chew on a few grains of ajwain or carom seeds. You can also add ajwain to water, boil slowly and then let her drink it lukewarm. The seeds help release the distension of the abdomen and relieves pain.
Flatulence
Symptoms: Stomach pain, a bloated feeling, constipation
Safe remedies
· Garlic helps relieve gas. Prepare a soup out of garlic, cumin seeds, pepper and coriander leaves.
· Asafoetida (hing) also helps relieve gas. Mix a pinch of it in a little warm water and let your child glug it down.
Constipation
Symptoms: Stomach pain, no bowel movement for days
Safe remedies
· Cure chronic constipation with figs in water, and raisins and bananas.
· Carrot or spinach soup relieve constipation.
Earache
Symptoms:
 Hearing trouble, ear pain, irritability
Safe remedies
· Dip a cloth in hot water and wring out the excess. Now keep this cloth close to the ear; the moist air will improve the circulation in the ear.
· Create a hot compress by heating rock salt crystals, rolling them in a handkerchief, and placing the compress on the ear that hurts.
Caution
· Do not insert anything into the ear as it could damage or perforate the ear drum.
Headache
Symptoms: Restlessness, a feverish feeling, pain
Safe remedies
· Headaches due to sinus problems can get better with steam inhalation.
· Fresh sandalwood paste on your child’s forehead will help soothe the pain.
Mouth Ulcers
Symptoms: Discomfort while eating or drinking, inflammation on the inner lips and cheeks
Safe remedies
· Mix half a glass of buttermilk with water in which rice is washed. Add one teaspoon salt, and gargle with this four to five times a day.
· Eat a bowl of boiled sprouts which can be cooling, and help cure mouth ulcers in the long run.
· Apply a dot of glycerine on the ulcer. Do this after every two hours; it can reduce the pain and inflammation.
Diarrhoea
Symptoms: Stomach pain, loose motions
Safe remedies
· Boil turmeric powder, pepper powder and crushed ginger with buttermilk, and give it to your child to drink. It can be served along with rice as well. Turmeric has the best anti-bacterial properties and can prevent diarrhoea too.
· Mix finely crushed ginger in yogurt, and get your child to eat a bowl of it. Yogurt and milk have the capacity to curb diarrhoea when mixed with ginger, which aids digestion.
Dandruff
Symptoms: Constant itching, appearance of white flakes
Safe remedies
· Mix a teaspoon of lemon juice with four teaspoons of coconut oil. Massage your child’s scalp gently with this mixture and keep it on for 30 minutes before washing the oil off. Repeat this for a fortnight and the dandruff will go away.
· Apply only a teaspoon of lemon juice and rub it gently into the scalp. Lemon works as a cleanser and helps get rid of the flakes.
· Soak methi seeds in water overnight and then grind to a paste. Rub the paste on your child’s scalp. This has a cooling effect on the scalp and reduces dandruff.
