Milk & Fish
Q: Can you tell me why one cannot have milk and fish in the same menu? Zainab, Karachi
A: In my opinion nothing really happens in taking fish with milk. In countries like USA it is a common habit to take fish and milk together, it is only here in Pakistan that people avoid it. Certain cases have come forward where people have had skin pigmentation after taking fish and milk in the same menu. Such situation mainly arises when a person is already allergic to either food items. One can still have both together if the taste doesn’t make him/her uncomfortable. In India, France and Germany a lot of fish dishes are cooked with milk. I guess it is important to mention here that there are some types of fish that may cause stomach indigestion if taken with milk due to protein interaction, but it doesn't cause spots on skins or any such diseases. Yogurt and milk are used commonly with fish all over the world and especially yogurt is used in Pakistan to marinate fish. It is only a myth that people get Vitiligo after consuming fish and milk together and there is no authenticity in it. It is an autoimmune disease against melanin (pigment) producing cells.

Benefits Of Bottle Gourd
Q: What is the nutritional importance of bottle gourd (lauki)? Is its plain soup helpful in losing weight? Warda, Lahore
A: Bottle gourd is high in dietary fiber, vitamin C, zinc, thiamine, iron, magnesium and manganese. The nutritional value of gourd makes it suitable for maintaining optimum health and weight loss. Bottle gourd is rich in fiber and water and hence helps to curb hunger pangs. If you take the juice in the morning, you are having a fiber rich start, hence you are not ravenous for breakfast and do not overeat at breakfast. Bottle gourd juice can work as a wonderful snack replacement. A glass of this juice and a bowl of fruits can be an ideal afternoon snack whenever you feel hungry. It should not be strained with a sieve as the fiber is the key to weight loss. Just drinking bottle gourd juice will not melt your fat away. It has to be combined with a low calorie diet and adequate exercise.

White Vs Brown
Q: Is there any difference in the nutritional difference of white and brown rice? Which one is better to use during weight loss? Momal Karachi
A: The process that produces brown rice removes only the outermost layer, the hull of the rice kernel and is least damaging to its nutritional value. The complete milling and polishing that converts brown rice into white rice destroy large quantities of vitamins, iron, manganese, phosphorus, dietary fiber and essential fatty acids. Fully milled and polished white rice is required to be "enriched" with vitamins B1, B3 and iron. However if you would like to lose weight it is best to stick to whole grains i.e. brown rice and whole wheat bread. White rice is a simple carbohydrate; it is converted to sugar with very little calorie usage.

Watery Melon
Q: Is eating watermelon after lunch or dinner injurious to health, my grand mother always restricts me in doing so? Dua, Islamabad
A: The health benefits of watermelons are really great. No matter how it is sliced, it is packed with some of the most important antioxidants found in nature. It's best to eat it on an empty stomach and about an hour before a regular meal to let it do its work perfectly. You can’t utilise the full benefits of the fruit if you have it after a meal. It has lots of water and if one takes fruit after meal, it will dilute the digestive juices of stomach and restrict the digestive system from performing its work. It is therefore recommended to eat watermelon before meals or after half an hour of meals to avoid any digestive problems.
