Herbal Tablets
Q: Do herbal weight loss tablets really help with weight loss? Zainab, Peshawar
A: Herbal weight loss tablets are very popular but using them is injurious to your health. A person might lose some weight initially but the basic idea behind such medicines is that they include diuretics, which are medicines given to cardiac patients to lessen swelling (edema). These patients pass lot of urine but they are under the supervision of a physician. In our society rules and regulations are not followed and slimming centers are using such herbal medicines for weight reduction which can produce serious side-effects and also put an extra load on our kidneys in passing urine again and again without any medical illness.

Allergy to Chicken
Q: I am allergic to chicken. Can you suggest a good substitute for it? Danish, Islamabad

A: Allergy to chicken means that your protein intake will be reduced. Proteins are body builders and as all other components of a balanced diet which include carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals they are important for a healthy diet. Chicken can be replaced with fish along with a regular intake of milk and dairy products. Proteins are also present in red meat and if your weight allows then you can have it in your diet though not daily.

Fit Body
Q: My weight is 65kg and my height is 5'5. I want to know how can I remove excess fat from my abdominal and hip area? Please suggest some exercises and a diet plan for me. Sana Fahad Khan, Karachi

A: You have mentioned your height and weight but didn’t mention your age which is also very important to know before making any suggestions. To reduce fat from your thighs and hips you have to reduce your weight only then will your body come into shape. The diet plan I suggest for you includes brown breads for breakfast, curry with a slice of brown bread and a bowl of salad for lunch and yogurt with vegetable soup for dinner. Do 10 sit ups in the morning and at night and walk for 30 minutes every day five times a week.

Ulcerative Colitis
Q: I am a 43-year-old man and I am suffering from ulcerative colitis. Could you please suggest a diet plan so that I can prevent colon cancer and other related problems? Mubashar Ahmad Jan, Rawalpindi

A: Changes in diet and lifestyle are always helpful in controlling symptoms of ulcerative colitis. There are certain foods and beverages which can aggravate your symptoms, so it is better to eliminate such foods from your diet. If you are lactose intolerant and have diarrhea then eliminate dairy products from your diet. In your case a high fibre diet makes pain, gas and diarrhea worse. Eliminate all foods, fruits and vegetables that produce gas like beans and cabbage. Eat small meals and drink plenty of liquids. Avoid raw fruit juices, caffeine and carbonated beverages.

Food for Depression
Q: Are there any foods that help cure depression? Khalid, Karachi

A: Diet changes can play an important role in the management of stress and depression.  To overcome depression I suggest you drink lots of water, make fruits and vegetables part of your diet and decrease the caffeine intake in tea and cold beverages as they increase depression. Decreasing sugar intake along with regular exercise also helps as it releases serotonin (the neurotransmitter that can make you happy and feel good). For people who have sleep disorders sugar and caffeine makes mind more hyperactive thus increasing stress. A person’s own effort in managing stress is also very important and keeping one-self busy rather than thinking about those things which hurt you will help in beating depression quicker.

Flavored Milk
Q: I am a 13-year-old girl; My 9-year-old brother and I don’t have a habit of drinking milk but we like tea. How can we get rid of tea and start drinking milk? Aalia Mirza, Karachi

A: As both of you are quite young and this is definitely your growing age, your intake of milk should be enough to provide you with calcium. Excessive tea intake is not a very good idea, as tea has tannins which interfere with absorption of iron and thus leads to deficiency of iron. When a person is at a growing age the intake of calcium is very important so they can achieve their maximum height. If you don’t like the taste of milk then you may add flavour to it either by adding chocolate syrup. Many varieties of flavoured milk are also available and they are a better option as compared to tea.

Natural Process
Q: Are there any natural methods, herbs or foods by which I can increase my cup size? Sara Gill

A: A well rounded figure normally makes women feel more comfortable, confident and desirable. Sometimes it really becomes a problem when the cup size is not appropriate. Hormonal imbalance is one of the reasons why female have small breasts. The female hormone, estrogen, causes breast enlargement so foods which are high in estrogen are helpful in the natural enlargement of the breasts. The food which are high in estrogen include soy products, dairy products, flax seeds, sun flower seeds, ginger, oregano, turmeric, thyme, chick peas, kidney beans, lentils, parsley, barley, oats, brown rice, apples, carrots, cherries, cucumbers, dates, papayas, and tomatoes.
